Come to the Clinic

Sometimes, that’s the best answer there is

As part of our Employee Wellness Program, we regularly facilitate workshops with our partner organizations. One of the sessions we return to most often focuses on Self-Awareness and Emotional Regulation, two of the most foundational pillars of psychological well-being. And what makes these sessions truly special is the conversations. The questions. The moments where someone pauses, nods, and says, “Yes, that is exactly what I go through.”

These rooms have a way of drawing out what people rarely say out loud. And across many of these workshops, one theme surfaces again and again. A hunger that goes beyond understanding. People don’t just want to make sense of their emotions. They want to know what to do with them. “This resonates — but how do I actually (practically) apply it in real life?” is perhaps the most common undercurrent in every session we run.

At one such workshop, a participant raised their hand and asked something that many of us have quietly wrestled with: “How do I disconnect from work when I am out of office?” It is a simple question. A fair one. “Come see me at the clinic,” replied the clinician who was facilitating the workshop.

At first, it can feel unsatisfying, almost as if the question is being redirected rather than answered. But when you pause and consider it more carefully, it begins to make sense in a deeper way.

We live in a world that loves quick fixes. When it comes to mental health, we often expect the conversation to end with a neat, step-by-step formula that we can apply tonight and feel better by morning. But the truth is more nuanced and far more human than that. There is no one-size-fits-all answer to questions about mental well-being. Two people can sit in the same office, experience the same demands, and walk away with completely different emotional realities. One may feel energized, another drained. One may switch off easily, while the other carries the weight of the day long into the night.

That is not a flaw. That is the nature of being human.

And that is precisely why “Come to the clinic” is not a deflection. It is an invitation. Perhaps the most honest and caring one a clinician can offer. It is a quiet acknowledgment that your experience deserves more than a generic answer. It deserves attention, context, and a space where the support can be shaped around you, not around a template.

What we have observed, time and again across these workshops, is that awareness is everything. The moment someone asks, “How do I take better care of myself?”, something has already shifted in them. The journey has already begun. Because the most important ingredient in any mental health journey is not the perfect technique or the right coping strategy, it is the willingness. That quiet decision to say: I want to feel better. I want to live better. I want to thrive in what I do.

That willingness belongs to you. No clinician, no workshop, no article can place it in you. But once it is there, we can meet you in it and walk alongside you.

If you ever find yourself in a conversation about well-being, nodding along but wondering “How do I actually do this?”, that moment of awareness is already the first step. Honour it. Pay attention to it. You do not have to carry the weight of your emotions alone or figure everything out in silence. Lean on the people around you, a trusted friend, a family member, someone who makes you feel safe enough to be honest. Take care of yourself in the small, intentional ways that only you know you need. And when you feel ready, seek professional support, not because something is broken, but because you deserve guidance that is tailored to you and your story.

Aim not to reach for what worked for someone else, or settle for a generic answer you once heard. Your inner world is your own. The support you seek should reflect that.
