For nearly four years, the Mastercard Foundation, in partnership with Solid Minds Counselling Clinic, has been driving a transformative effort to strengthen mental health and wellness among Mastercard Foundation Scholars, Alumni, and Partner Organizations within universities implementing the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program worldwide.
This initiative aims to strengthen university partners’ capacity in mental health and wellness, reduce stigma, improve access to mental health services, and enhance scholar well-being.
Through this partnership, Solid Minds works alongside university partners to strengthen institutional capacity, increase access to mental health services, and foster environments where stigma is replaced by empathy, inclusion, and understanding. At its heart, this initiative helps ensure that mental health becomes an integrated part of the academic journey—not a separate concern.
As the collaboration has expanded, it now spans a global network of 36 Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program partner universities, including:
- 24 institutions across Africa
- 4 in Europe, 4 in Canada, 2 in the USA
- 1 in Central America (Costa Rica) and 1 in the Middle East
Partner Institutions on the Continent Coming Together

This initiative is further strengthened by key technical partners, including Light for the World (LFTW) and World University Service of Canada (WUSC) who bring essential expertise in inclusion, accessibility, and systemic impact.
Together, we are co-creating programs that equip institutions to:
- Improve scholar access to high-quality mental health services
- Build the capacity of staff and faculty in mental health support
- Train and mentor scholar peer leaders and mental health champions
- Demystify and normalize mental health conversations through campus-wide campaigns
- Develop inclusive, youth-friendly approaches that respond to scholars’ real-life challenges
